Meet the artist

aedan hanley

Aedan Hanley is a contemporary painter interested in what people reveal when they aren't quite able to control the impression they make.

His psychologically charged paintings explore the strange, funny and complicated ways people perform confidence, seek reassurance, communicate badly, protect themselves, desire attention, and try to hold their composure together.

Working across neo-expressionist figuration, abstraction, raw gesture, text and layered surfaces, Hanley exaggerates faces, bodies and color not to describe people literally, but to make their emotional contradictions more visible.

"“I’m fascinated by the small things people give away—the expression that contradicts the words, the posture trying to look relaxed, the moment composure slips. Painting lets me exaggerate those moments until they become strange, funny and familiar.”

Ultimately, the work is about recognition: that instant when someone looks at a painted character and thinks, I know that feeling. I know that person. Maybe I’ve been that person.

THE PROCESS

“Color is my compass. Each gesture, each layer, is a search for balance between what can be seen and what can only be felt.”

Inspiration often begins in small moments—the flicker of light, a rush of color, a fleeting emotion. My paintings translate those sensations into movement and layered texture, where energy and reflection meet. Each piece becomes a visual conversation between chaos and calm, emotion and form—an invitation for viewers to pause, connect, and feel something familiar within abstraction.

The Geometry of Sound

A study in rhythm and restraint, where color and form move with the quiet precision of sound.
